CULTURE AND RELIGION
East Africans are generally friendly and particularly welcoming to any visitor who can command a couple of worlds in English or Swahili. For the more adventurous traveller, there are many rituals, ceremonies and festivals of traditional music, which are well worth experiencing. There are large numbers of Muslims, Christians and Hindus as well as a strong following of traditional African beliefs in country areas.
SHOPPING SAFETY
Kenya, Tanzania & Uganda are friendly countries, and there are many shop outlets geared to tourists which sell a wide range of curios, clothing, wood carvings and Masaai handmade jewelleries. However, as with any city/town, please be VERY careful when shopping, do not wander around at night in towns (use taxis), and do not leave valuables in hotel rooms etc. Lock up in safes where available.
WHAT TO BRING
A valid passport is mandatory, and visa requirements should be checked before you travel. To make the most of the game reserves and national parks, carry binoculars and field guides. Photographers will need a zoom lens for wildlife (70-300 or similar). Toiletries and other essentials can be bought in the cities.
WHAT TO WEAR
Daytime temperatures are generally warm to hot, so bring lots of light clothing. Evenings are cooler, especially at high altitudes, so carry a couple of light sweaters too. Those who intend to hike on the mountains of East Africa will be exposed to alpine temperatures and should pack accordingly. Solid walking shoes and sturdy clothing are ideal for forest walks. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses and a waterproof jacket. |
